KANSAS CITY, MO. (June 18, 2017) – City official announced a new urban development plan from City Hall today.
The plan, called the Affordable Housing Act, was approved by a majority of the City Council last month and final amendment were completed last week. The AFA calls for inner city homes abandoned during the financial crisis of 2008-2009 to recieve subsidies and incentives to create affordable homes in Kansas City’s depressed housing market.
The Act targets several low-residence areas in the city, notably the Bradford Suite Hotel which burned down in 1997 and has been the cite of several mysterious murders and other criminal acts.
Long-time local city residents voiced concerns regarding the plan, citing increased crime and zoning changes that would allow multi-family dwellings in areas that did not, traditionally, allow them. The Council acknowledged the concerns, but nevertheless passed the plan.
Developments are already underway, with real estate companies moving to advertise available homes and moving companies offering discounts to relocate new residents.
